Nestled among the lush mountains
of the Allegheny Plateau, lies the serene town of Emporium, Pennsylvania
and the Woodland Elementary School of Cameron County. Hemlocks and
hardwoods such as cherry, oak, and maple cover most of the 401 square
miles. The school district encompasses the total county which
includes seven boroughs and townships. Cameron County has a
population density of fifteen people per square mile, half of whom reside
in the Emporium Borough. Powdered metal workers, tool and die
makers, machinists, and lumbermen make up most of the working population
in the community.
Woodland Elementary School services 371 students
in grades kindergarten through six and has a staff of forty-seven. The
building was constructed in 1963 and originally housed students in grades
kindergarten through grade four. A major two-year addition and
renovation project was undertaken in 1994, allowing all of the district's
elementary students to be educated in one building. The renovations
included updated science rooms, a greenhouse, a full-sized gymnasium and
an adaptive physical education room, a telephone and television in each
classroom, a Large Group Instruction Room, and new instructional areas for
art and music. Our Parent Teacher Organization (P.T.O.) funded new
playground equipment, picnic tables, and pavilions.
Because of the remote location of the school
district, the renovations emphasized state-of-the-art technology, giving
students immediate access to research data.
At the Woodland Elementary School, an
integral part of our student's education consists of two computer labs
each with 27 computers and overhead computer projection
capabilities. Individual classroom computers are all networked to
the main server. A new instructional media center has a wide range
of informational texts, picture books, multicultural literature, a story
telling room, as well as computer stations available for research. A
television studio staffed by students produces programs on station WKID
which can be viewed in every classroom and throughout the community.
Many support systems are
available with the school for the student who is not successful within the
traditional curriculum. Instructional support is provided to the
classroom teacher to adapt or modify instruction when necessary. An
Intermediate Unit 9 Preschool and a community Headstart program are available
for the preschool population.
A visitor to the Woodland Elementary School would
catch the excitement and sense the pride of a school community which is supportive
and encouraging. The Woodland Elementary School proudly reflects the
Cameron County School District's vision which is dedicated to excellence
in education for all students as we prepare them to achieve their full potential
in an ever changing world.
